A little preparation, lots of possibility

Plan lightly.
Travel deeply.

Use this as a first compass, not a rigid schedule. Conditions, opening hours and transport can change—confirm details close to your travel dates.

The useful essentials

Before you set off.

Keep your plan flexible and build in time for the journeys between the places you came to see.

When to visit

Think coast by coast.

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons affecting different regions at different times. Broadly, the southwest is drier around December–March, while the east coast often has calmer weather around May–September. Local conditions vary; check a current forecast.

Getting around

Short distances, slow hours.

Trains connect key towns and are memorable, but can be busy and delayed. Buses reach widely; hired cars with drivers offer flexibility. Allow more time than the map suggests, especially in hill country.

What to pack

Ready for sun and showers.

Bring breathable clothing, sun protection, a compact rain layer, comfortable walking shoes and a light cover-up for sacred sites. Hill evenings can feel cool compared with the coast.

Travel well

Stay curious and considerate.

Check current entry requirements and health guidance before travel. Carry drinking water, respect wildlife boundaries, and keep a small supply of local cash for rural stops.

A sample first week

Seven days, at an island pace.

This route is a starting point, not a race. Fewer transfers mean more time to notice where you are.

Days 1–2 · Negombo / Colombo

Land softly

Rest after the flight, find your bearings and enjoy the markets, cafés and coastal life. Keep the first day gentle.

Days 3–4 · Cultural triangle

Meet the old cities

Choose one or two sites—perhaps Sigiriya and Dambulla, or Anuradhapura. Start early, pause in the heat, and leave time for the journey.

Day 5 · Kandy

Into the hills

Travel to Kandy, a lakeside city with rich cultural life. Visit sacred places respectfully and give the afternoon room to breathe.

Day 6 · Train to Ella

Let the window do the work

Take the hill-country railway if seats and schedules align. Bring water and snacks; enjoy the route without treating it as a guaranteed timetable.

Day 7 · Ella

Walk, look, linger

Choose a local walk or viewpoint and enjoy the cooler air. If time allows, extend the trip rather than rushing to fit in another region.

Have more time?

Choose your ending

Add a wildlife stop or continue south to Galle and the coast. Check season, road time and sea conditions before committing.
